Write, Celebrate, Support! Join the Fun for America’s 250th Anniversary!
The Warwick 250th Committee is hosting a Student Essay Contest as part of its 250th Anniversary Celebration. The topic of the essay must relate to the American Revolutionary War.
Students in grades 4-12 are encouraged to participate. Prizes will be awarded for essays in both fiction and non-fiction genres for grades 4-6, grades 7-9, and grades 10-12. Participants may choose their own topic or select one from the lists below. Writing/editing assistance will be provided at the Warwick Public Library on multiple dates between June and September for registered participants, schedule to be arranged. Essays may be any length needed to share your research (non-fiction/fact-based) or tell your story (historical fiction/creative writing). There’s no pressure—just enjoy the writing process, be creative, and have fun!
Final submissions are due by September 14th at 5 p.m. and must include the Name, Grade, and Email used when registering.

Award ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, October 24th from 2:00 – 4:00 pm at the Warwick Public Library.
Non-fiction topics might include:
- colonial fashion
- military music
- military uniforms
- your favorite Patriot
- a family ancestor
- military artillery
- medicine on the battlefield
- local historic cemeteries, etc.
Fiction topics might include:
- how you felt when your father went off to fight
- your best friend in colonial times
- tending to your pets and farm animals
- how you supported the war effort
- coping with the loss of a family member in the war
- your life in a colonial family, etc.

Students (by a parent or guardian) may register for the essay contest at the City’s Celebration event on June 20th at Rocky Point Park from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. Or register online above.
Online registration must be completed by a parent or guardian. All affiliated entities and individuals are not responsible for essays not received.
